Naming guide for your cornhole team
Cornhole names come from two fields. One is the game's own slang: an airmail goes straight in, a slider slides in and a four-bagger is a perfect round. The other is corn: kernel, cob, husk, shuck. Corn puns are the heart of the sport's humour, and the pun list on this page is written around them.
Teams are pairs, and most games happen at cookouts, fundraisers and neighbourhood tournaments where the bracket is a sheet of poster board. A name has to be quick to write with a marker and quick to shout across a lawn. Two words is plenty. The longest-name filter helps if the organiser prints the bracket.
For a family or neighbourhood event, a street or a surname makes the name. Put it in the box for a word to include and the patterns add slingers, shuckers, a harvest or a co-op around it. League players who throw every week may prefer the tough style, which uses the scoring slang and endings such as sinkers and sharpshooters.
Before you commit to a name
- Read your league's or organiser's rules on team names: many set a maximum length and ask for names that are fine to read aloud to a mixed crowd.
- Look at this season's schedule or last season's standings for the same name or one that sounds almost the same. This site cannot tell you whether a name is already taken in your league.
- Say it aloud the way a scorekeeper or quiz host would announce it. If it needs explaining, it will not survive week two.
- Check that it fits where it has to go: a scoresheet box, a sign-up form, the back of a shirt, a group chat title.
- Ask the whole team before you register it. A name half the team dislikes gets shortened to something else by mid-season.
Questions
What do airmail, slider and four-bagger mean?
They are cornhole terms. An airmail drops straight into the hole without touching the board, a slider lands on the board and slides in, and a four-bagger is all four bags in the hole in one round. The generator uses them because players recognise them at once.
Are these names fine for a school fair or a family reunion?
Yes. The lists hold nothing crude and nothing about drinking, although the game is popular at tailgates. The cute style, with its corn muffins and field mice, is the gentlest.
How do I name eight or ten pairs for a tournament quickly?
Generate a batch, heart one name per pair and copy the favourites list in one go. Locking a word, for example one group word such as Bushel, gives every pair a different name with a shared theme.
