How these walking team names are built

This generator draws from 154 hand-picked words in 9 lists and uses 16 naming patterns, plus 5 more that wrap around a keyword you type. The patterns can combine into up to 3,850 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

Naming guide for your walking team

Step challenges put team names on a leaderboard that the whole office looks at every morning for a month. That is a long run for one joke, so the name should be easy to like and should not depend on the team being in the lead. Names about strolling, wandering and taking the scenic route age well when the team sits in the middle of the table.

Walking teams include people who would never sign up for a race. A name that talks about speed or pain puts them off, and one about fresh air and a lap at lunch brings them in. This page keeps its own word list, separate from the running page, for that reason: pavement, footpath, park bench and pedometer in place of splits and batons.

For a charity walk, the name is read by supporters and printed on a fundraising page. Put the cause, the person you walk for or your workplace in the box for a word to include, and choose the classic or cute style for names that sit well next to a donation button. Departments in a workplace challenge can do the same with their own name.

    Questions

We need names for many teams in an office step challenge. Any shortcut?

Type each department into the word-to-include box in turn and heart the best result for each. The favourites list keeps them all, and you can copy the list or download it as a text file to send to the organiser.

What kind of name suits a charity walk?

A plain, warm one that names the cause. Use the classic or cute style, add the cause as your included word, and avoid jokes that need explaining to someone reading a sponsorship page.

Is there a tough style for a walking team?

Yes, for teams that mean to win the challenge. It uses marching and striding describing words, pathfinders and mountain goats as mascots, and endings such as pavement pounders.

Do the names mention fitness trackers or apps?

No brand names are in the lists. General words such as pedometer, step count and leaderboard are used, so a name works with whatever device or app your challenge runs on.
