Team Namer

Field and court league team names

Four generators for leagues with a schedule, a shirt and a shared cooler of orange slices. Each one draws on the terms of its own game, from the dugout to the back row to the penalty spot.

How to choose a name for a rec league team

A rec league name has a practical life. The organiser types it into a schedule, a volunteer writes it on a whiteboard, and somebody eventually orders shirts. Names of two words survive all three; names of five get shortened by the league whether you like it or not. The filter for the number of words is the fastest way to stay inside that limit.

Decide how seriously the team takes itself, and be honest. A tough name on a team that is there for the exercise is a joke in itself, which can be exactly what you want. A self-mocking name on a team that then wins the division is just as good. The mismatch only hurts when half the team did not agree to it, so vote.

Mixed and family leagues usually ask for names that can be read aloud at a field full of children. Every list here was written with that in mind. Puns in these generators lean on the game's own vocabulary rather than on anything you would have to explain to a ten-year-old.

If a business sponsors the team, or the team represents a street or a workplace, put that word in the box for a word to include. The keyword patterns place it in front of a mascot or a group word, which is the shape most sponsored team names take.
