How these running team names are built

This generator draws from 154 hand-picked words in 9 lists and uses 16 naming patterns, plus 5 more that wrap around a keyword you type. The patterns can combine into up to 3,850 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

Naming guide for your running team

Relay and fun run teams are named at the moment someone fills in the entry form, usually in a hurry and usually by one person. The form has a character limit, the name is printed on bibs or a results page, and it is too late to change it afterwards. Spend five minutes here first, and set the longest-name filter to the limit on the form.

Running humour is about pace and pain: being slow, being sore, and doing it anyway. Names in that vein tell other teams that you are in it for the day out, and they get a cheer from marshals who read bibs for hours. The funny style collects them. A club that races to place will find the tough style closer to the mark, with fleet, swift and turbo describing words and fast animals.

Charity teams should lead with the cause. Type the name of the person, the charity or the town into the box for a word to include, and the patterns add striders, a relay or a pace group to it. Supporters at the roadside read the name as you pass, so short and clear beats clever.

    Questions

What suits a relay team with runners of very different speeds?

A name that does not promise speed. The neutral patterns pair a running word with a plain mascot such as striders or milers, and the funny style adds honest describing words such as undertrained and last-wave.

Can I use these for a running club and not only a one-day team?

Yes. For a standing club choose the classic style, which builds names from home words such as Towpath and Ridgeway plus running club, track club or harriers club, or put your own town in the word-to-include box.

Our entry form allows only a short team name. What should I set?

Set the longest-name filter to the form's character limit, counting spaces. Two-word names almost always fit, so you can also set the number of words to two.

Is there a separate page for walking teams?

Yes. Walking groups and step challenge teams have their own generator with walking words, because a name about sprinting does not suit a team that strolls.
