How these golf team names are built

This generator draws from 154 hand-picked words in 9 lists and uses 16 naming patterns, plus 5 more that wrap around a keyword you type. The patterns can combine into up to 4,067 different names before filters. Every name in the list shows the pattern behind it, so you can see why it reads the way it does.

Naming guide for your golf team

A scramble is the friendliest format in golf: everyone hits, the team plays the best ball, and one good shot in four is enough. Scramble team names reflect that. Most admit to slices, lost balls and generous use of the mulligan, because the field is made of people who play twice a year for a good cause.

The name usually ends up on a cart sign, a leaderboard and a sponsor's thank-you email. That makes two demands: it should be short enough for a cart sign, and it should be something the charity or the company is happy to print. The lists on this page are clean, and the classic style gives the most formal results.

Company and charity foursomes often carry the firm's or the cause's name. Type it into the box for a word to include and the patterns put a mascot, a group word such as fourball or an ending such as bombers after it. If your team has a real low handicapper, try the tough style; if not, the funny style is the honest choice.

    Questions

What makes a good name for a charity golf outing?

Something the organiser can read out at the prize table without a pause. Golf terms with a light touch work well, such as a mulligan or a bogey paired with a mascot, and so does the name of your company in front of a group word.

Our foursome is not good at golf. Which style should we use?

Funny. It brings in slicing, bunkered and three-putting describing words, mascots such as worm burners and shrub searchers, and puns about lost balls and sand traps.

Will the name fit on a cart sign?

Ask the organiser how many characters the sign or the scoring app shows, then set the longest-name filter to that number. Every name in the next batch will fit.

Are real courses, tournaments or players in the lists?

No. The home words, such as Willow Bend and Briarwood, are invented, and there are no puns on players or events. If an invented word happens to match a real place, that is coincidence.
