Team Namer

Lane, lawn and course team names

Four generators for games of aim rather than running. Bowling, pickleball, cornhole and scramble golf each have a rich vocabulary of their own, and that vocabulary is where the best names come from.

How to choose a name for a bowling, pickleball, cornhole or golf team

Games of aim have the best raw material for names because their terms are short and odd: gutter, dink, airmail, mulligan. One of those words next to a plain mascot or group word already sounds like a team. Look at the pattern shown under each generated name to see which half is doing the work, then lock that half and re-roll the other.

These are also the games where teams are small. A pickleball or cornhole team is often two people, and a scramble team is four. Small teams can carry a more personal name, so the box for a word to include is worth using for a surname, a street or the name of the charity the event supports.

Bowling leagues and golf outings print names on score monitors and cart signs with strict limits on length. Ask for the limit first and set the longest-name filter to match. A name cut off after twelve letters can read very differently from what you meant.

Charity scrambles and company outings want names that work in a sponsor's newsletter. The classic style gives plain names that will not raise an eyebrow, and the puns here stay with the vocabulary of the game.
