Naming guide for your pickleball team
Pickleball gives a team two vocabularies at once. One is the game: dink, lob, erne, the kitchen. The other is the pickle itself: dill, brine, gherkin, jar. Almost every team name in the sport uses one or the other, and the patterns on this page mix them, so a tangy describing word can sit in front of a court term.
Most pickleball teams are two people. A doubles name is closer to a nickname for a partnership than to a club name, so it can be more personal. Try the box for a word to include with a surname, or with both first initials, and look at the patterns that end in pair, duo or partnership.
Ladders, round-robins and club tournaments post brackets on a board or an app, where space is short. Keep to two or three words. If the event is a social, the funny and cute styles suit it; for a rated tournament the tough or classic style reads better on a bracket next to strangers.
Before you commit to a name
- Read your league's or organiser's rules on team names: many set a maximum length and ask for names that are fine to read aloud to a mixed crowd.
- Look at this season's schedule or last season's standings for the same name or one that sounds almost the same. This site cannot tell you whether a name is already taken in your league.
- Say it aloud the way a scorekeeper or quiz host would announce it. If it needs explaining, it will not survive week two.
- Check that it fits where it has to go: a scoresheet box, a sign-up form, the back of a shirt, a group chat title.
- Ask the whole team before you register it. A name half the team dislikes gets shortened to something else by mid-season.
Questions
Do the names work for a doubles pair as well as a league team?
Yes. The group words include pair, duo, doubles and partnership for two players, and paddle club, ladder and brigade for bigger teams. Lock the group word that fits and re-roll the rest.
Why so many pickle jokes?
Because the sport's name invites them and players enjoy them. If you would rather avoid dill and brine, choose the tough or classic style, which builds names from court terms, mascots and home words only.
What is an erne, and why is it in a team name?
It is a shot hit close to the net from outside the court, beside the kitchen. Terms like erne, poach and stack are in the word list because players recognise them at once, which makes a name feel like it belongs to the sport.
Can I make a name from our two surnames?
Type one surname, or both joined with a hyphen, into the word-to-include box. The keyword patterns add a mascot, a group word or a court term around it.
